About the Company
"Twenty years ago very little was known in this country about a centuries old European tradition. But the concept struck a cord with those attracted to its benefits. By studying modern European designs and developments, proponents transplanted the concept here, where ingenuity and craftsmanship have given rise to a growing and vibrant industry."
Erik Nilsen, president of Thermal Mass Inc., first became aware of the thermal storage fireplaces while building his own home over 20 years ago. He immediately became intrigued with the concept. Here was an effective heating device that resulted from an appropriate and accessible technology. It promoted sustainability and self-reliance by using a natural and abundant renewable resource for fuel. By utililizing that fuel efficiently it was more economical, less labor intensive and safer to operate than other wood fired systems, with a negligible impact on air quality. It could be crafted from readily available materials into a unique and beautiful object. Elegant in its functional simplicity, this fireplace made sense.Thermal Mass Inc. is the result of that first chance encounter with and subsequent dedication to the thermal storage concept. Within the last decade, modular core systems developed in North America have become increasingly popular. Thermal Mass was immediately attracted to the practicality of the modular systems. With them, the process of assembly is simplified. Moreover, many of the functional attributes are built in. This allows us to focus more on the creative aspect of the installation; the overall design and its integration into the home.
In the planning stage we work closely with the homeowner using our years of experience to formulate an informed design that fits the homeowners requirements. In addition, when the installation is done by a local mason, we are available for on site consultation with the mason to ensure a proper understanding of all elements of the construction. As New England distributor for Temp-Cast Enviroheat we maintain an inventory of cores, options and accessories. We also offer custom soapstone veneers with superior heat storing characteristics as an alternative to the more traditional veneer choices of brick and stone.
