A Temp-Cast fireplace with see-thru and bakeoven options and a facade of soapstone located in Sullivan, NH. Soapstone is a superior material for masonry heaters. Though relatively soft and easy to cut and finish, it is very dense and is able to store more heat in a given amount of weight than other masonry materials. The heat comes through to the surface much more quickly and the surface temperature is higher. The connection to the chimney is in the soapstone bench at the right of the fireplace, a distance of about 5 feet. The small handle at the bottom right of the connectiopn is the shut off damper which is generally located in the chimney. The shut off damper is closed after the fire burns completly out preventing the heat stored in the fireplace from being drawn out by the chimney draft. In this case, because the chimney is in an enclosed space on the other side of the wall and therefore inaccessable, the shut off damper was located in the connection.
